Which habits lead to tooth wear? How do I stop my teeth from wearing?

Tooth wear is of three types-

  1. Attrition – Caused by excessive and habitual clenching and grinding of teeth (bruxism). Most people are not aware of this type of wear and the habits causing it. It leads to loss of enamel of chewing surfaces of teeth and lead to shortening of teeth. An occlusal splint helps to stop such tooth wear
  2. Abrasion – caused by vigorous and faulty toothbrushing. Always use a soft toothbrush and ask your dentist for proper brushing technique. If the abraded teeth are sensitive, you may need a corrective treatment.
  3. Erosion– caused by excessive acid attack on the enamel. Usual factors that cause acid attack are aerated drinks, citrus fruit juices, acid reflux and even wine. Reducing the intake of acidic foods and appropriate treatment may help relieve the symptoms.
